A bid has been made to close the roads and footpaths around the old Huddersfield sports centre site.

And it’s likely to pave the way for the future demolition of the buildings on the site ahead of Kirklees Council plans to sell it.

A formal order has been made called The Stopping up of Highway, which is an order required to close or divert public highways.

In this instance it would lead to the closure of Pine Street and access to the old car park, the footpath linking Lonsbrough Flats, and the bridge to the old Huddersfield Sports Centre.

The order adds: “Any person aggrieved by, or desiring to question the validity of or any provision within the order... may, within six weeks of 10 August 2015 apply to the High Court for the suspension or quashing of the order or of any provision included.”

The 2.744 hectares (6.785 acre) area was to become a new Tesco superstore. Instead, the financially troubled retailer bought itself out of a legal deal to buy the land from Kirklees Council and walked away from building a new store in Huddersfield.

It means Kirklees Council owns all of the site and councillors and officers have previously spoken of plans to sell it for re-development.

The whole site, which includes council and land that was owned privately, was to be razed to make way for a new Tesco store.

Kirklees and Tesco agreed a legally-binding deal in 2010 but in January this year they finally confirmed they would no longer build a new store in Huddersfield.

The two parties renegotiated a deal that would allow Tesco to walk away from its legal commitment to buy the land, and the Examiner revealed the deal was worth £18.8m to Kirklees – which was made up of the original deal and the buy out clause.

It also saw Kirklees get all its land back, plus the value of land the council didn’t previously own.

The two-storey car park in Pine Street has been closed and on-street car parking in the area has been made free of charge.

The Lonsbrough Flats and adjacent Ibbotson flats have been empty for some time.
