A MAN accused of causing the death of a motorist by dangerous driving has been told when he will stand trial.

Matthew Birkby's four-day trial is due to start at Bradford Crown Court in November, just three weeks after the first anniversary of the death of 19-year-old Matthew Dowie.

Mr Dowie, a furniture maker of Parkside, Flockton, was killed when his Renault Megane crashed into a field after careering through a wall off Wakefield Road, Lepton.

He was declared dead at the scene of the tragedy, which took place on the night of November 4 last year.

Birkby, 21, of Albany Road, Dalton, made his first appearance before a judge at the crown court yesterday.

He was granted bail pending a further pre-trial hearing on Friday, August 3.

Birkby is understood to have been driving another vehicle at the time of the fatal accident.

He was not asked to enter a plea to the charge yesterday.

But Judge Roger Scott confirmed that a trial date had been set for November 26.
