A MAN has appeared in court after failing to attend for a drugs assessment.

Drug addict Sohal Singh, of Greengate, Lepton, was before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

The 44-year-old admitted ignoring his appointment with the Lifeline service.

He also admitted failing to attend court on a previous occasion.

Carl Kingsley, for Singh, said that his client had been in too much of a state to attend both.

He said: “It must be the world’s worst keep secret that this defendant is drug dependant.

“Everybody in this town knows this.

“He is a hardened user. He should know better but he doesn’t and he needs assistance.”

Magistrates were told that Singh is currently on a community order with a drug rehabilitation requirement.

Mr Kingsley said: “The purpose of these assessments is to bring people off the radar into treatment, not people already in the system.

Magistrates adjourned Singh’s case to allow further assessment from the probation service.

Singh will next appear before the court on August 2.

His bail condition is that he reports to the police station the day before this.
