PRACTICAL lessons are being offered to children by the West Yorkshire Archive Service.

The scheme, being tested in Batley, gives children the opportunity to find out more about conservation and preservation.

It is supported by the Creative Minds Project, which aims to inspire and excite children in science, technology, engineering and maths.

The scheme uses the resources and expertise of museums, libraries and archives across the region.

County archivist Sylvia Thomas said: "This venture is really exciting for us. It is the first time the archive service has worked with schools to develop materials for the science curriculum.

"We hope activities suggested in a conservation pack will help children to understand the importance of caring for our heritage."

Schools wanting to receive a pack should phone Linda Birch on 01132 8982 80.
