RESIDENTS from Huddersfield have asked for better lighting to stop one of the town's tunnel becoming a crime blackspot.

Residents at Lockwood asked their local councillors to lobby Kirklees Council for street lights at the tunnel between Bentley Street and Thornfield Avenue.

The tunnel (pictured) runs just below Lockwood railway station and has seen several recent acts of vandalism and violence.

Residents put the problems down to a lack of lighting to deter criminals in the tunnel and on a footbridge further down Bentley Street.

Their bid for lighting has been submitted to Kirklees Council's Huddersfield area committee.

Lockwood councillors Ian Rutter and Mohammad Sarwar, in a joint statement, said: "We are absolutely delighted to report that a scheme is being submitted. Hopefully these measures should help to make these areas safer for the local community."
