SOME 2,000 school pupils will take on youngsters from Europe in a mini-Olympics event in Huddersfield.

The schoolchildren will take part in an Olympic-style opening ceremony at the Galpharm Stadium.

It will involve children from France, Germany and Poland as well as a team of young gymnasts from China, where this year’s Olympics will be held.

The show will act as a curtain-raiser for the Huddersfield Giants’ game against Bradford Bulls on July 6.

A spokeswoman for Kirklees Council said: “Preparations are well under way, with hundreds of schoolchildren practising their various activities for the big day.

“This celebration incorporates music, cheerleading and dance, as well as sports demonstrations and competitions.”

The event is part of the Kirklees Youth Games, which launched in 2006.

More than 15,000 young people have taken part in sports activities linked to the games as part of the council’s Getting Fit For 2012 initiative.
