AN award-winning butcher is to launch a new pie for the Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival.

Andrew Jones, owner of A R Jones butcher shops, has teamed up with Splash Winery to create the ultimate meat and pastry product, a beef and red wine pie.

The pie, made with prime Yorkshire steak marinated in elderberry wine, will make its first appearance at the festival, which runs in St George’s Square from August 16-19.

The festival will also include a food court, cookery demonstration theatre, a children’s kitchen workshop and stalls from Kirklees’s twin town, Besançon.

Many of the events feature exotic dishes, as well as a wide variety of more usual foodstuffs.

Huddersfield Town and Huddersfield Giants will again do battle in a Masterchef-style contest. Admission is free.

In addition to his special festival pie Andrew Jones is also planning other new products, including a pork and black pudding pie, a pork and rhubarb pie and a lamb and mint pie.

Andrew said: “There’s something about putting steak and wine in pies. They go together so well. It’s one of those classic combinations of flavours that always tickle the tastebuds. It’s as nice as they come.

“It should be a big hit at the festival. The pies generally are. By the end of the four days I’ve usually got sore fingers from cutting up all those pies.

“Pork and rhubarb should be popular because Yorkshire rhubarb is in the public eye at the moment.

“The festival is a great event with a great buzz. People come to the stand and then they come to the shop to try them again. It’s good to get feedback.”

More of Andrew’s creations are to appear on UKTV Foods Market Kitchen at 8pm on Friday, with Tom Parker-Bowles and Guardian food critic Matthew Fort.

Andrew has won many awards for his meat and pastry confections, including a trio of awards at the Northwest British Pig Executive – the pork “Oscars” – in January last year.
