THE Lexus 460 stands out as one of the machines at the very top of the car maker’s art.

Now I realise that a car costing £71,000 ought to be pretty good, but this biggest Lexus, in long wheelbase form, is not far from perfect.

And where, with a Mercedes S-class, there is a vast extras list to top up equipment, the 460 already has it all.

In fact, if this car ain’t got it – from radar controlled automatic braking to a sound system good enough for the Albert Hall - you don’t need it!

The V8 engine is completely inaudible, the automatic gearchanges totally seamless, and performance excellent with a very quick response.

Build quality is second to none, security is the best you can get and safety is also superb.

The eight speed gearbox has manual and sport modes but it works so beautifully as an auto that I only tried each once and then left well alone.

This car has the best touch screen in the world, which encompasses the sat nav, audio, climate control and more, making them all easy to use.

The leather seats are heated and cooled by the aircon, and there is a DVD player with a drop-down screen for rear passengers.
