James Neville Mason was born in Croft House Lane, Marsh, on May 15, 1909, and died on July 27, 1984.

He married twice, to Pamela Ostrer (1941–1964) and Clarissa Kaye (1971–1984)

He had one daughter, the late Portland Mason Schuyler (1948–2004), and one son, Morgan Mason.

Mason had no formal training as an actor and studied architecture at the University of Cambridge.

His career spanned more than six decades and he shot over 100 films.

The 2005 film Madagascar character Mason the chimpanzee is based on and named after the Huddersfield actor.
