A lindley man reported to police his number plates had been stolen to avoid prosecution for a speeding offence.

But he later admitted he had made it up to avoid the speeding ticket.

He has since been charged with perverting the course of justice and the initial speeding offence which occurred in Cumbria on August 17.

Det Insp Andy Parr of Huddersfield CID said: “If he had just accepted the speeding offence he would most probably have got three points on his licence.

“Because of his dishonesty he wasted police time and now also faces much more serious criminal offence.”

The 51-old-man will appear at Kirklees Magistrates Court on September 17.
