A huge water pipe burst has left a community without running water.

Lindley residents living on West Street, Blackthorne Drive and Ryecroft Drive have had no water or very low water pressure since around 8am this morning following the burst on West Street.

Water is now flooding the busy street, causing traffic delays.

Clr Cahal Burke, who has been on the scene said: “There is a lot of surface water on West Street and I’ve had a number of residents ringing me who are experiencing problems.

“I think that most people in the area are now aware of what is going on and hopefully it is nothing too serious.”

Clr Mark Hemingway said that his wife was sent a text from Yorkshire Water to explain what was happening and believes it has been sent to other affected residents.

Lindley cllr Gemma Wilson said: "I find it strange that we have had three burst water mains in as many months- I've not experienced this anywhere else we have lived."Yorkshire Water told me that pipes are unpredicatble but I'm wondering if it's linked to the amount of building going on here and am going to investigate this further."

Yorkshire Water staff are currently on the scene trying to solve the problem.

Kirklees Council Conservative member Mark Hemingway.

Nav Uppal, 35, of Ryecroft Drive, said: “The pressure suddenly dropped and by 9am we had no water at all. It’s a bit frustrating because we only came back off holiday yesterday so have a lot of washing to do.

“We had a similar issue four months ago.”

Yorkshire Water spokesman Tom Underwood said: “These things unfortunately happen but we were on the scene immediately and it is a short term problem.

“Water supplies are now quickly returning to all the properties affected and normal service should be resumed shortly.

“We would like to apologise for the inconvenience this caused to residents and can inform that the cause of the water loss was due to a burst water main on West Street in Lindley that has now been fixed.”
