A drunk woman got behind the wheel after finding out that her husband had blown their savings on gambling and drink.

Lindsay Smith, of Felcote Avenue in Dalton, crashed her car into a wall after knocking back wine.

Her solicitor said that matters had come to a head when the 36-year-old discovered that her husband had taken the cash.

Smith appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court where she pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to provide a specimen of breath.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, said that police were called to Lydgate in Lepton on July 5.

A member of the public witnessed her Toyota crashing into her property before reversing and hitting a wall belonging to a neighbouring house.

Police were alerted as Smith appeared to be drunk and she provided a positive roadside breath test.

She was arrested and asked to provide further samples at the police station but failed to do so.

Zara Begum, mitigating, described her client as “mortified” by her actions that day.

She explained that Smith’s husband had an alcohol problems and his attempts at rehabilitation had so far failed.

He suffered another breakdown and Smith found it difficult to cope.

Ms Begum said: “She’d learned that some of their savings had been used for gambling and drinking by her husband.

“She found this out on the day in question and it came to a head.

“She drank to excess because she couldn’t cope – she was mirroring his actions as a coping strategy.”

Magistrates were told that Smith didn’t give the breath samples because she had already provided one at the roadside and she couldn’t understand why another was needed.

They heard that the administration manager has since quit drinking.

Magistrates ordered a full report before sentencing her.
