LINTHWAITE has been branded a "forgotten village".

Community campaigners say there is a need to improve people's perceptions of the village.

The case has been taken up by the Colne Valley Society action group.

Its chairwoman, Glenda Oldroyd, said: "The real thorn in Linthwaite's side is that it lacks any real village centre.

"The layout and linear nature of the village has meant that it becomes more a path through than a place to stop and visit."

She said there was a fear that Linthwaite was missing out on a lot of things.

She added: "A lot of residents say it has become a forgotten village.

"We at the society are pushing hard to make this a memorable Christmas for residents.

"The society is prepared to pay for lights to decorate a Christmas tree in Hoylehouse Fold and is having talks with Kirklees Council to investigate the practicalities.

"If the ideas are successful the society would like to revive the traditional carol service, which used to be held around the tree every Christmas."

Mrs Oldroyd said the campaigners believed that good community spirit was essential to brighten up Christmas for Linthwaite residents this year.

Local businesses and shopkeepers are being encouraged to put up decorative lights along Manchester Road at Hoylehouse.
