THEY named their pub quiz team after the infamous lion reported to have been on the loose in Shepley.

And now The Lions have celebrated their roaring success in a national competition.

The pub quiz team from the Black Bull pub in Shepley beat 600 groups to be named best in the country.

But as they raise their glasses to their victory, they have one more challenge to face.

The team – Dave Bill, James Worsley and brother and sister duo Jamie and Amy Turner – are set to take on some of the most daunting experts in the quiz world.

The group will compete against famous faces from TV shows The Chase and Eggheads.

They are Mark “The Beast” Labbett, “The Governess” Anne Hegerty, and Eggheads regulars Barry Simmons and Dave Rainford.

The celebrities will attend a special quiz night at the Marsh Lane pub on October 22.

The pub was one of 600 across the country that took part in this year’s Great British Pub Quiz, run by Punch Taverns.

Teams had to answer a new quiz sent for eight weeks, including a round written by Mark Labbett.

Those with the highest scores then went on to compete in regional heats, followed by a national final featuring the winners of these.

This took place last month at Aston Villa Football Club, and was co-hosted by The Beast himself.

Lions members Dave and James, both from Skelmanthorpe, and Jamie and Amy, from Shepley, were runners up in last year’s national final.

This year they were named top of the final 25 teams, after beating Derby-based Miner’s Mayhem by just three points,

Dave, 37, said: “We were absolutely chuffed to win.

“We knew we were leading going into the last round so we were confident – but not over confident!

“The final round was a quiz ladder, we had to see how far we could get, but then that was it when we got a question wrong.

“The question we went out on was obscure, we had to say which state in the US had a place named Jonathan Creek.

“The answer was Illinois and we said Kentucky. We didn’t score well in that round but luckily neither did the team in second place.

“It was fantastic, a really great set up. I’d recommend it to anyone – providing they don’t beat us!”

The Lions are great friends and have taken part in pub quizzes for the last five years.

They used to be called The Dogs due to their trips to greyhound race nights, but changed their name following reportings of an escaped lion that turned out to be a hoax.

Following their triumph the team won a cheque for £2,000 as well as trophies each.

They plan to defend their title next year, but not before they take on the celebrity experts as part of their prize.

Dave, a quizmaster at The Grove pub in Skelmanthorpe, said: “I’ve met Mark before and he’s not like the big gruff persona you see on TV – he’s a lovely guy and clever.

“Anne will be the one to beat because she’s the world’s top-ranked woman quizzer.

“I think on any given day they’d beat us nine times out of 10, but then we’re winners so we’ve got a chance.

“It depends on the questions, the less highbrow the better.

“If we get questions on Big Brother and modern pop we might be alright!”
