A dance music track featuring Tony Benn has gone viral in wake of the Labour MP’s death.

‘Chip Away’ by Tony Benn and Nine Invisibles was recorded and produced by the band featuring Huddersfield musician Pat Fulgoni.

The track, recorded at Mr Benn’s constituency office in Chesterfield and around West Yorkshire, was produced for the ‘No Compromize’ (sic) compilation.

The CD, also featuring tracks by well known bands such as Suede and The Wedding Present, was made in 1996 for the Campaign for Free Education (CFE).

CFE, of which Mr Benn was honorary president, was established in opposition to the introduction of tuition fees.

Pat, also a singer and record label owner, volunteered to be music officer for CFE which was based at the then Huddersfield Polytechnic Student Union.

Secretary of the CFE was Graham Hellawell who was also Huddersfield Polytechnic Student Union President.

Chip Away came about from a recorded interview with Labour MP Mr Benn about the Conservative government’s plans to make students pay for their university education, which had previously been free.

Mr Benn’s thoughts were set to music composed by Pat’s ambient music collective, Nine Invisibles.

The 30-track compilation, also featuring Pat’s Huddersfield-based dance-rock band Kava Kava, was released on Pat’s Chocolate Fireguard label and stocked at HMV stores.

Pat said: “The wonderful Tony Benn was a true inspiration to us all. One of a kind. I still can’t believe we met, let alone collaborated.

“I remember the PR company we hired intercepting a breakfast TV interview with Tony by getting the presenters to play the track.

“Tony then switched topic and talked about the importance of higher education and he rammed home the issues and they struggled to get him off air. It was fantastic.”

Pat added: “We also organised benefit gigs all over the UK and met the wonderful Tony Benn a few times.

“He agreed to be interviewed over at his office in Chesterfield and to feature on the CD with some music which we got together. He even set up our press conference at the House Of Commons.”

Tony Benn, an MP for 47 years between 1950 and 2001, died on March 14, aged 88.

A staunch socialist despite his privileged background, Mr Benn turned down his hereditary peerage to remain in the Commons.
