HUDDERSFIELD man Tony Boyers has become the first contestant eliminated from a competition to win a brand new car.

Self-employed joiner Tony, 43, from Taylor Hill, was competing to win a Suzuki Ignis 4x4 in the Pulse radio Week on Wheels contest.

The competition challenged Tony and five other contestants to live for a week in a Suzuki Grand Vitara car at Huddersfield's Kingsgate shopping centre.

They entered the car on Saturday and have spent 24 hours a day in the car - except for meal and comfort breaks.

Pulse listeners have been voting to keep their favourite contestants in the car.

Yesterday , Tony had the least votes and was the first to leave.

The remaining contestants will be whittled down by daily evictions until Saturday lunchtime, when the winner will be announced.

Tony said it had been a great experience.

He said: "It's been good. I have made five fantastic new friends."

Tony has invited all the contestants to his wedding party at the George Hotel on August 14. He will marry his partner Dawn Armitage on July 23 in Cyprus.

Tony said he has missed Dawn, his 12-year-old son Jake - and a good curry!

He said: "It was strange not to know what was going on in the outside world. The worst thing was eating with shoppers looking at you. The whole thing was more difficult than I thought - it's very cramped in there."

The contestants carry out daily challenges which they must win to keep comfort items in the car. On Tuesday night, a front seat was taken out because a task was failed.
