KIRKLEES pupils battled it out with brain power to try to win a literary quiz.

Teams of pupils from 26 schools across Yorkshire took part in the Kids' Lit Quiz at the North Light Gallery in Armitage Bridge on Monday.

Eight teams from Kirklees took part - each made up of four Year 7 and 8 pupils.

The teams were from Colne Valley High School, Kirkburton Middle School, Holmfirth High, Moor End Technology College in Crosland Moor, Whitechapel Middle School in Cleckheaton, St John Fisher Catholic High in Dewsbury, Batley Girls' High School and Scissett Middle School.

The winners were North Halifax Grammar School.

The quiz involved the students working together to answer 100 questions in 10 categories designed to cover all reading tastes.

The quiz aims to broaden pupils' literary horizons.

It was invented by Wayne Mills, a senior lecturer at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, who is pictured acting as quiz master at the event on Monday.

Other special guests included Livi Michael, author of The Whispering Road and Steve Augarde, author of Celandine, who both cut a book-shaped cake.

The event was organised by the Kirklees Education Service's School Effectiveness Service.
