National news

A round up of today’s main headlines:

FLORIDA SCHOOL SHOOTING SUSPECT NIKOLAS CRUZ ‘MEMBER OF WHITE NATIONALIST GROUP’
An orphaned 19-year-old who participated in paramilitary drills with a white nationalist group has been charged with murder over the deaths of 17 people who were shot at a Florida high school. Nikolas Cruz legally purchased the AR-15 rifle used in the assault at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, law enforcement officials said. A Florida judge ordered that the suspect be held without bail on 17 counts of murder. Cruz was wearing an orange jumpsuit with his hands cuffed at his waist during the Thursday afternoon hearing. His lawyer did not contest the order and had her arm around Cruz during the brief court appearance.

GARY SPEED TOLD POLICE BENNELL DID NOT ‘BEHAVE INAPPROPRIATELY’ TOWARDS HIM
Former Wales manager Gary Speed was interviewed twice during police investigations into Barry Bennell but said the coach never behaved inappropriately towards him, his family has said in a statement. Speed, who hanged himself in 2011 at the age of 42, was mentioned during the 64-year-old’s trial at Liverpool Crown Court as one of four players who had taken their own lives after being coached by the convicted child sex abuser.

‘COLLAPSE IN HOME-OWNERSHIP AMONG YOUNG ADULTS SINCE MID-1990S’
Home-ownership levels among young adults on middle incomes in particular have “collapsed” over the past 20 years - with those in this bracket now having a one in four chance of being on the property ladder compared with two in three in the mid-1990s, a report has found. The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) said that, in 1995/96, two in three (65%) of 25 to 34-year-olds on incomes falling into the middle 20% bracket for their age group were home-owners. But by 2015/16, just one in four (27%) of this group owned their own home.

Morrisons in product recall

Supermarket chain Morrisons is recalling its Italian Penne Bolognese Bake ready meal because it contains celery which is not mentioned on the label.

The 400g packs, priced at £2.23, did not include celery in the lists of ingredients which could pose a health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to celery.

File photo dated 30/09/16 of a Morrisons store, as the supermarket said it enjoyed an "especially strong" festive season as it posted a 2.1% hike in sales after keeping a lid on price rises for cash-strapped shoppers. PRESS ASSOCIATION Photo. Issue date: Tuesday January 9, 2018. The Bradford-based chain said the like-for-like retail sales performance in the 10 weeks to January 7 came as it resisted hiking prices despite surging costs, with the price of a basket of key Christmas items the same as last year.
