Details on the Linthwaite fire exercise
Fire crews will carry out a “small scale exercise” at Grosvenor Chemicals in Lithwaite on Wednesday from 7pm to 9pm.
A fire service spokesman said: “Grosvenor Chemicals along with WYFRS (West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service) would like to reassure local residents from Slaithwaite and Linthwaite not to be alarmed if they see fire crews in the area.
“The exercise will be carried out to allow staff at Grosvenor chemicals and retained fire crews from Kirklees district to test the company’s on site emergency procedures.
“It will also test our response when dealing with small chemical spills and subsequent decontamination of on-site staff and fire crews.”
Grosvenor Chemicals was hit by a serious blaze in May 2010 which prompted widespread concerns about safety.
Statement from West Yorkshire Police:
Armed police were called to Bracken Hall Road today at about 10.50am
to a report of a firearms discharge in the street.
No-one appears to have been injured in the incident and officers are on scene.
A local man has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in custody.
Early enquiries are underway to determine precisely what has taken place.

5,000 cars seized for no insurance

What we know so far
The M62 was closed this morning after a ‘distressed’ man was spotted on a bridge near Brighouse.
M62 cleared up
Looks like the M62 drama is over for the time being - here’s the Google Traffic picture around Ainley Top:
More police incidents
Apart from the M62 troubles this morning there’s a couple of police incidents we’re looking into.
Police are investigating a house fire in Bradford Road, Birstall, and we’ve despatched a photographer to the scene so more on that later.
Also, we’ve had reports of police activity in Spaines Road at Fartown. There was some police tape and a scene cordoned off but that’s gone now so we’re checking that out as well.
M62 problems easing - hopefully
Traffic is said to be starting to clear on the M62 and the front of the queue is moving. That’s really good news.
All lanes re-opened
All lanes are re-opened on the M62 now Westbound between junction 26 at Chain Bar and 25 at Brighouse. But don’t expect things to get any better quickly.
And all surrounding routes are clogged too so if you can delay your journey to work - or work from home like I’m doing right now - it might save you some stress. I feel your pain.
Broken down lorry
Here’s a picture of the broken down lorry that caused more delays on the M62. The motorway was closed briefly for recovery just now.
Avoid the M62
After the three-hour closure of the M62 earlier the traffic didn’t get time to clear before a lorry broke down in the queues Westbound between junction 26 at Chain Bar and 25 at Brighouse.
The two outside lanes (of four) are closed so I’m afraid is going to be a long commute this morning. It could have been worse, though. At least traffic is lighter for half-term.
M62 latest
Insp Darren Wainwright, of West Yorkshire Police, has confirmed that a man was talked down from a bridge over the M62 and that he has been detained by police for his own safety.
One of my colleagues has been stuck in the traffic around Ainley Top and Rastrick just now so you can expect all the surrounding routes to be difficult on your journey to work.
Man talked down from bridge
I’ve spoken to West Yorkshire Police just now and the M62 was closed around Brighouse because a passing motorist saw a man in a “distressed” state on a bridge.
This happened at 3.40am and the motorway was shut in both directions near Junction 25. Specially-trained police negotiators were called and the man was safely brought down.
The motorway re-opened before 7am but tailbacks had built up as the early rush hour period started.
Reports now of two lanes closed Westbound around Hartshead Moor Services because of a broken down lorry. Stay here for more updates.
