Baseball bat couple sentenced
Remember the couple caught unleashing baseball attack in the street in Dewsbury? They’ve been before Kirklees Magistrates today and avoided jail terms.
Basharat Hussain, 33, pleaded guilty to criminal damage while his wife, Jasmine Hussain, also 33, admitted possession of an offensive weapon and threatening behaviour.
The couple were caught on camera on Northgate in August when Basharat Hussain got out of his car and struggled with the victim before his wife followed with a bat held above her head.
The judge called it an “ugly incident” and gave Basharat a community order while his wife received a jail term of 146 days suspended for a year. She must also complete a community order with up to 20 days of rehabilitative activities. They both have to pay £85 costs and £85 victim surcharge.
Blood stains link Cox to Mair by a "billion-to-one" match, court hears
Blood stains that were a “billion-to-one” match to both Mrs Cox and Mair were found on the gun and dagger when they were tested, the court heard this afternoon.
DNA expert Hilary Parkinson said “blood spots” from the Labour MP found on the gun showed that she had been very close to it. A bloody handprint in the Labour politician’s blood was also found on a brown jacket prosecutors claim Mair dropped in a nearby street as he left the scene.

Regional: Yorkshire faces risk of blindness epidemic
Thousands of people in Yorkshire could go blind unless urgent action is taken to fund medical research, a new report is warning today.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the biggest cause of blindness in Yorkshire and The Humber, currently affecting more than 47,000 people. A report, funded by the Clothworkers’ Foundation, sets out the case for more funds to be allocated to scientific research to find better treatments and, ultimately, a cure for AMD. The report has been backed by many leading medical figures.
Michelle Dutton, the Macular Society’s Yorkshire and The Humber Regional Manager, said: “Unless strong action is taken right away we will be facing an epidemic in the decades to come.”

WARNING GRAPHIC DETAILS: Pathologist gives evidence at Jo Cox trial
The latest from the Old Bailey at day four of the trial where Thomas Mair is accused of Jo Cox’s murder: The court has heard how Jo was holding her head in her hands to protect herself when she was shot.
Ambulance service staff told in statements read out that the MP was “unresponsive” and was given emergency treatment. She had “swelling” on one of her eyes, an abdominal bleed and “straight edged puncture” wounds to her upper torso, the jury have heard this morning.
Pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd who carried out a post-mortem said there were stab wounds to Jo’s chest cavity, stomach and head. One stab wound passed through her right arm into her torso, the court heard.
There were also bullet wounds to her head, chest and hand. Dr Sheperd said a bullet shot at Jo’s left hand had gone straight through.
WATCH: Footage of Newsome Mill demolition
Here is the latest from the scene at Newsome Mill where demolition crews are knocking down the destroyed remnants of the building.
Snow has melted but weather is grim!
Traffic from Meltham towards Uppermill on Standedge Road has now eased. Overnight snowfall was causing traffic chaos, although most of it is melting now.
And while on that subject - check out today’s glorious weather forecast. Time to crack out the shorts and pay a trip to the beer gardens...just kidding. Highs of 4 degrees with heavy showers predicted later this afternoon. Bring a brolly.
Former Newsome Mill boss would have been "disgusted" at its ruin
The former Managing Director at Newsome Mill would have been celebrating his 82nd birthday today - as the building he loved prepares to be demolished.
Mark Bedforth died in 2002 and worked as MD and Chairman at the Mill when it was owned by Taylor & Littlewood until its closure in 1983. His son Charles has said today that Mr Bedforth would be “disgusted” as seeing the building being left to ruin.
Charles, 52, said: “One of the reasons it burned so easily was because the wooden floorboards would still have had the oil from sheep’s wool engrained in it from the textile work. The whole building would have been like a tinder box.
“Seeing it being torn down today of all days is extremely emotional.”
Fire damages Dewsbury workshop
Fire services also attended a fire in Dewsbury last night. Firefighters from Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Cleckheaton and Ossett attended the blaze at GB Projects at The Mill on Pepper Royd Street at 5.30 and were there until half past midnight.
One crew member said one part of the building, a furniture workshop, was severely damaged by flames and described as “completely gone”. Other parts were saved from serious damage.

If you’ve been stuck in traffic around Cooper Bridge this morning, here’s why. This huge puddle has been slowing everything down with queues right back through Mirfield and along Wakefield Road onto the M62 at junction 25.

Old sports clubhouse set alight
More information coming through on the fire in Armitage Bridge. The disused social club building at the old police sports ground at Woodfield Park has been completely destroyed after it was engulfed in flames this morning.
Fire engines were deployed from Huddersfield, Rastrick, Meltham and Holmfirth at 6.35am and arrived at the scene to find the building 100% involved in fire. A member of the crew said the fire is now under control and crews are being scaled back to just two fire engines, but that the building was “completely gone”. No one has been injured and there was nobody inside the building at the time.
There is no information about how the fire started yet.
Traffic hit by delays in the Pennines
Woodhead Pass near Langsett has now been cleared after a lorry broke down earlier - traffic is slowly beginning to move. Snowploughs are now on route.
Traffic is very heavy on Standedge Road in Diggle between Huddersfield Road and Chapel Road - so very slow if you’re heading from Marsden towards Uppermill.
Reduced visibility, plus snow and fog, is slowing traffic on the M62 around Rishworth Moor so take extra care.

Woodhead Pass is closed in both directions this morning between the Flouch roundabout and Holme Moss Road (turn off for Holmfirth) - if you’re heading in the Langsett direction out of Holmfirth seek an alternative route.
