Masked robbers "deliberately targeted" home

A couple were forced to shut themselves in their living room after armed thugs robbed their home last night.

The Morley residents were terrified when the three masked men, armed with a hammer, knife and what appeared to be a handgun, forced entry into the bungalow on St Andrew’s Close and demanded cash.

They then searched the house before taking cash and leaving. Police believe the suspects deliberately targeted this address.

One of the men was described as being of large build, stocky and tall. Anyone with information is asked to contact DC 565 Stead at Elland Road via 101 quoting crime number 13160756613.

Nearly three quarters want Kirklees to sell Bacon painting

Yesterday we ran a poll on Twitter to ask our followers whether they thought Kirklees Council should consider selling a Francis Bacon painting gifted to us, which could be worth as much as £60m.

It seems people have had some strong opinions on this, but one side stronger than the other.

72% of you (out of 555 votes) said the council SHOULD sell the painting to fund our public services, while 28% voted for it to stay in our possession. What do you think?

Suspicious bungalow fire in Batley

It was a busy night for fire services last night. Dewsbury Fire Station also attended a suspicious bungalow fire in Staincliffe, Batley.

Emergencies were called out shortly before 5am to the blaze on Manor Way, which had started at the back of the property. No-one was in the building at the time so no injuries, although services did manage to contact the resident who turned up later.

Two pumps attended and the back bedroom was completely gutted by the fire. A police spokeswoman has just confirmed the fire is being investigated as suspected arson, although we should have more information on this soon.

Mum and children evacuated from house fire

Fire services were also called to a fire in Ossett shortly after midnight, where a mum and four children had to be evacuated.

The blaze on Potter Avenue, Lupset, was started when a wheelie bin outside caught fire. Due to the bin filled with rubbish from Christmas, the flames went up quickly and caught onto a gas meter next to the house.

Crews from Dewsbury attended and evacuated the family and next door neighbours. No-one was injured and damage was caused to the property’s guttering and external gas pipe. Repairs were organised. No word yet whether the wheelie bin fire was an accident or started deliberately.

A firefighter from Dewsbury Fire Station said: “Wheelie bin fires don’t start by themselves, but that’s not to say this was arson. It could have been someone walking past and flicking a cigarette. There is a lot more rubbish at this time of year so people need to be especially careful with flames around bins.”

Cows evacuated from Lepton barn fire

Firefighters from across Kirklees have been at a barn fire in Lepton overnight. Cows had to be evacuated from the fire at Cop Ridings Fram, Chimney Lane, although thankfully no-one has been injured.

A crew member from Huddersfield Fire Station said they were called shortly after midnight and eight pumps attended from Cleckheaton, Rastrick, Slaithwaite, Meltham, Mirfield and Dewsbury.

The fire is now under control but has been left to burn out due to the farmer asking for hay bales not to be drenched in water. Police were also at the scene.

This picture was taken and posted on Twitter by the Kirklees Rural Policing team. We’ll bring you more on this fire when we get it.
