Man wanted on recall to prison

Police in Bradford are appealing to people in West Yorkshire in a bid to get this man back behind bars.

David Bland, 28, is wanted on recall to prison, as well as for a number of other offences including assault and criminal damage.

He is described as having a local accents and is about 6ft1in tall. Members of the public are urged not to approach him but to call police immediately.

Anyone who sees him is urged to call 101 quoting crime reference 13160760737.

WATCH: Robbery victims speak of their ordeal

The victims of a gang of robbers who operated in Kirklees and Calderdale have spoken out about their ordeal and appealed for their possessions back.

Peter and Sue Hewson were threatened and assaulted by the gang who burst into their home in Wyke, near Brighouse, one year ago today stealing £220,000 worth of jewellery and their Mercedes Benz, which has never been found. The four thugs were jailed last month for a total of 65 years.

The Hewsons now want to see the return of a 3.7ct diamond ring worth nearly £70,000 which was stolen in the raid, as well as a Rolex watch worth £55,000.

Mr Hewson said: “We are still trying to rebuild our lives and move on from what was such a traumatic event, and if anyone is able to help us find these pieces of jewellery this process will be made slightly easier.” See their interview below.

New recruit for the Giants

The Giants have signed Bradford Bulls forward Alex Mellor on a three-year deal.

It comes after the Bulls announced they’ve gone into liquidation this week, with a statement from administrators yesterday confirming they had “ceased trading”.

Police have confirmed the incident in Meltham is not a robbery.

Police at "ongoing investigation" in Meltham

Police have issued a statement to confirm they are attending an ongoing investigation in Meltham this afternoon.

A spokeswoman for the Force said: “Police attended an address on Huddersfield Road, Meltham today (5 January) to carry out enquiries as part of an ongoing investigation.

“Officers are still at the scene and enquiries are continuing.”

Care home nurse struck off

A care home nurse who allegedly straddled a female Alzheimer’s sufferer in her 90s has been struck off.

Anthony Moorhouse was accused of hovering over the woman at a nursing home in Huddersfield in June 2014.

The decision has come from the Nursing and Midwifery Council today. More to follow shortly.

We’re getting reports in of police activity in Meltham at a shop next to the newsagents on Huddersfield Road.

Coroners appeal after Batley man dies

Coroners are appealing today for the relatives of a Batley man to get in touch after he passed away.

Gabriel Chodonionek, 64, passed away on December 30 at his home address on James Street. Police say he died from natural causes.

Any relatives are asked to get in touch with Sam Cariss at Bradford Coroner’s Office on 01274 373 721.

Taxi driver helped man robbed by thugs on New Year's

Police are appealing after a man was robbed by thugs in the town centre in the early hours of New Year’s Day before being rescued by a taxi driver.

The 22-year-old was walking along John William Street when he was approached and attacked by a group of four to five men who pushed him to the ground and punched him. They stole his Samsung phone and fled the scene.

The victim suffered cuts and bruises and has two of his back teeth broken in the attack. Police say a taxi driver came to his aid and are keen to speak to him or anyone else who witnessed the attack. Anyone with information should call Det Con Nicole Rubio-Senior at Kirklees CID via 101, quoting crime reference 13170001424.

Regional: Man urinated on station platform before spitting at police

A man spat at officers after being caught urinating on a train station platform last night, police have said.

The man was arrested at Leeds Station shortly before 9pm after being caught in the middle of the indecent act. The man then spat at a member of staff after being challenged, before spitting at police and kicking an officer.

The 27-year-old was held in custody overnight.

Chief Inspector Lorna McEwan said, “Assaults on officers and rail staff are not ‘just part of the job’ and on any level, whether it be violence or verbal abuse, are simply unacceptable. The officers involved in this incident will be given the best level of support and care and we will undertake a swift and thorough investigation of the case, as we would with any other victim.”

Man found dead at Leisure Centre was staff member

A man who was tragically found dead at Huddersfield Leisure Centre over the weekend was a member of staff, Kirklees Active Leisure have confirmed.

The 20-year-old was discovered on Saturday morning, and was thought to have taken his own life. The Centre was closed throughout the morning on Saturday while police investigated.

Man dies after being struck by train

A 33-year-old man has been pronounced dead after being struck by a train near Leeds, police have revealed this morning.

Officers were called to the scene near Abbey Road in the city yesterday evening at 6.30pm following reports a man had been hit.

British Transport Police said the man’s family have since been informed. A spokesperson said: “The man’s death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Keith Hellawell facing new Sports Direct vote today

Huddersfield’s Keith Hellawell faces a new investor vote on his position as Sports Direct chairman today.

Shareholders will get a further vote on his position today, after 53% of them voted against his stewardship in September. It’s being reported that Mike Ashley may have to come to his rescue, as he has dominant voting rights.

Mr Hellawell, who was formerly Chief Constable at West Yorkshire Police, has vowed to resign if the majority of shareholders decline to back him.

Busy heading towards Huddersfield from Manchester

Reports of traffic on the M62 heading towards Huddersfield from the Manchester direction this morning - a lane has been shut due to an accident between a lorry and a car.

Traffic is slow between junctions 19 and 20 near Rochdale.

Dewsbury MP on BBC Women's Hour

Dewsbury MP Paula Sherriff is speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Womans Hour currently with regards to encouraging retailers to cut “gender price differences” and women’s health issues.

Paula is currently shadow minister for Women & Equalities and has campaigned on a number of women’s health issues such as added VAT on sanitary products, screening for breast cancer. Most recently she encouraged Tesco to scrap a price hike on women’s razors.

West Yorkshire has country's "highest crime rate"

The BBC have claimed that research conducted by them shows that West Yorkshire has “the highest crime rate in England and Wales”.

Figures obtained by BBC Yorkshire journalists revealed there were 90 reported offences per 1,000 people in 2015 to 2016.

The average figure for across England and Wales is 68 per 1,000.

Man charged over Birkby attack

Police have charged a man after a man was seriously injured in an attack in Birkby.

A 45-year-old man has been charged with wounding with intent and is due before Kirklees Magistrates today.

The 35-year-old victim remains in a critical condition in hospital. Read the full story here.

Lane closure on M62 westbound

One lane has been closed on the M62 westbound between junctions 30 and 29 due to a broken down vehicle.

One lane has been closed and traffic is slow but coping well.

Regional: Young boy killed in fatal collision

Some very tragic news emerging overnight: A young boy was killed yesterday after being knocked down by a car on a residential street.

Police said the tot was pronounced dead at the scene after the collision with a car at 2.14pm in Lofthouse near Wakefield.

Emergency services attended the scene but were unable to save the youngster. A police spokesman said: “Enquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances around this tragic incident.”

Very tragic news and our thoughts are with the boy’s family this morning.

Road closed after car goes into shop

If you’re working in the Calder Valley area, West Street in the centre of Sowerby Bridge is closed in both directions at the Foundry Street junction after a car has gone into a shop causing a gas leak, according to our traffic partners INRIX.

Avoid the area and seek another route if possible.

Fire at Calder Valley Skip Hire

Fire services from across Calderdale and Kirklees have been attending a fire at a building at Calder Valley Skip Hire waste site near Sowerby Bridge overnight, and are expected to remain there for a couple of days.

Crews from Huddersfield, Rastrick, Cleckheaton and Halifax attended the incident from 9pm last night, with Halifax Fire Station saying they will remain there for two days.

Eight pumps were at the site on Rochdale Road, Triangle, at the fire’s peak. The blaze, which is in the site’s steel building, has been reduced in height. Fire investigators will today try to determine whether there are any suspicious circumstances. The site’s operators and staff have been made aware of the fire, and no-one has been injured.

Morning all - busy in both directions on the M62 this morning between junctions 26 and 27 so you may have a bit of a delay if you’re heading to or from the Leeds direction.
