Anger over cash reserved for flood-hit communities

Halifax MP Holly Lynch has written to Northern Powerhouse Minister Andrew Percy over concerns about a funding pot reserved for flood-hit communities.

The £2.5m cash was held in the wake of the Boxing Day floods, but reports claim the cash - which was secured from the EU - has been spent to pay off a longstanding debt back to them.

Holly’s letter says: “Despite a number of specific written questions requesting further transparency on the recent application you have repeatedly failed to provide me with the information I have requested.”

Surgeon's hopes for more hand transplants after Greetland man's success

The West Yorkshire surgeon who carried out the country’s first hand transplant on a Greetland man says he hopes the operation will soon become as routine as a kidney transplant.

Consultant plastic surgeon Prof Simon Kay says he is encouraged by the progress of pub landlord Mark Cahill, who was his first patient in 2012. He has since completed the transplant on two other men and has two women on the waiting list for the operation.

Prof Kay said: “What we want wanted to do was come into the welfare state-funded health system and say, now, let’s have this new technique; let’s use it, evaluate it, work out what works, learn the lessons from case-to-case and roll it out as a service.
“We would like hand transplantation to be as routine and unremarkable as kidney transplantation.”

Mr Cahill has regained almost complete use of his new hand and can now pick up his grandchildren, tie shoelaces and drive a car.
