Tracy Brabin vows to fight intolerance after visit to Auschwitz

Batley & Spen MP Tracy Brabin has told how she was moved on a visit with local school pupils to Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The MP said “we must always tackle anti-Semitism and racism wherever we find it” after visiting the horror camp in Poland with pupils from Batley Girls School and Heckmondwike Grammar.

She said:

“It’s important that everyone in our community recognises the importance of being tolerant and of celebrating our differences. We must always tackle anti-Semitism and racism wherever we find it. On the day that we travelled to Auschwitz, the news reached us that Ken Livingstone has not been expelled from the Labour Party for his anti-Semitic comments. The decision shames us, and I support calls for the decision to be reconsidered.

Football ban for teen who punched elderly man

A teenage football fan has been banned from attending matches for three years after assaulting an elderly man at a West Yorkshire station.

Sheffield United fan Zakaria Khalifa, 18, was handed the ban after he was involved in a fight with rival Derby County fans at Leeds Station.

It happened in October last year when Khalifa ran to punch a Derby fan in the face and accidentally punched the victim, a 70-year-old man, when the fan moved out of the way.

The 70-year-old had been stood behind and was returning to Leeds from a day in Manchester. He was treated for his injuries in hospital.

Khalifa, from Sheffield, was sentenced to a six week curfew and ordered to pay £170 in costs at Leeds Magistrates Court.

Ram-raid on city centre Louis Vuitton store

Police are appealing after thieves ram-raided a Louis Vuitton store in an Italian Job-style burglary on Leeds’ main shopping street last night.

The store, in the Victoria Quarter on Briggate, had its front smashed by a silver Subaru shortly after 9pm. Items on display were then stolen.

The men then left the scene in a green Audi leaving the damaged Subaru behind. The Subaru, registration W359 CYG, has been recovered for forensic examination and enquiries are ongoing around its history.

Detective Inspector Charlotte Hails, of Leeds District CID, said: “This has clearly been a planned and organised offence targeting high value goods in the store.” Anyone with information is asked to contact West Yorkshire Police via 101.

BBC Look North tweeted this footage from the scene last night.

Goat Café re-opens under new name

The former Goat Café is re-opening this morning after the owners faced backlash in a social media meltdown and closed it for good.

The Trinity Street vegan eaterie has re-opened as The Peppercorn Café, and is reportedly still serving vegan and veggie food. The Goat Café closed last month after its owners began a series of bizarre rants on Facebook in which they launched explicit insults at customers equating meat-eating as “eternal damnation”.

We wish the new café plenty of success, and hopefully a wiser strategy when it comes to giving out their Facebook password.
