Kirklees police reveal results from nuisance bike clampdown

Police have hailed a ccampaign to crack down on nuisance bikers in Kirklees a success.

Officers in Batley say they have seized eight bikes, issued 11 warnings and reported four people for summons after a 20 patrol in the area to crack down on motorbikes and quads being ridden noisily and dangerously. The operation also resulted in numerous calls from the public to report anti-social bike riders. Sgt Chris Field, who led the operation, said:

“Nuisance bikes can cause distress and anti-social behaviour with noise nuisance as well as a danger to the public and their riders and since the operation began in April, we have had huge reduction in calls to the police regarding nuisance bikes.”

Model airplane batteries cause house fire

Fire services were called to a house fire in Shepley last night, after batteries for a model airplane that were on charge combusted and caused extensive damage.

The lithium and iron batteries had been left in a metal bowl on charge when they overheated and burst into flames in a utility room on Abbey Drive. Fire services from Huddersfield Fire Station were called out at 8.10pm.

Luckily, there was nobody in the house at the time and nobody was injured, although fire fighters have warned of the dangers of leaving devices and batteries on charge unsupervised. Watch commander Robin Ferguson said:

“Unfortunately they overheated and set fire. The man had been flying the airplane with his son and had taken extra precaustions by leaving the batteries in a metal container, but they were unlucky.”
