Police inspector recognised for his work despite debilitating sight loss

A West Yorkshire Police Inspector has been nominated for a National Diversity Award after losing almost all his sight in one eye.

Inspector Nick Rook is one of just a handful of impartially-sighted officers in the country. He has been serving for 20 years, but lost nearly half his sight after developing an ulcer while suffering health complications four years ago. His condition is extremely painful and he has regular visits to the hospital for treatment.

Insp Rook said: “Being put forward for the award is not only a heart-warming thing, but such a motivational thing, the actual lift I got from this makes a lot of the harder days and pain well worth it.”

Young magician snubbed by Britain's Got Talent bosses

Huddersfield’s young star magician Luke Lenihan has revealed how Britain’s Got Talent producers gave him the snub despite getting four yeses from the judges.

Luke, 17, auditioned for the show and was told by Simon Cowell his tricks were “the most unique magic act ever on BGT”. But despite this, his performance was never shown and he didn’t progress to the next stage.

Luke said that “at the time I was annoyed as I was extremely looking forward to seeing what I could do on the live shows”, adding: “But when I look back it was probably for the good [sic] that it was never shown, because maybe I wouldn’t have met the likes of Mayweather and Joshua and the rest of my new friends and contacts that I’ve made so far this year.” A very positive attitude, Luke!

Accident at Bellstring Lane

There’s been another accident at Bellstring Lane again this morning which is causing a bit of a backlog.

Services were called shortly after 7.30am to reports of a collision between a silver Honda and a white truck at the junction with Cockley Hill Lane. One man was trapped in his car but described as “conscious and breathing” and not thought to be seriously injured.

The road has not been closed but is blocked so traffic on the approach is very slow. Best to find an alternative route this morning.
