Your support could help change this girl's life

Over the weekend we brought you the story of Talia, a two-year-old girl from Crosland Moor who has a life-limiting condition called Dravet syndrome, which is a very rare form of childhood epilepsy.

Talia loves the outdoors but needs a specially designed garden so she can go outside - and the modifications are expensive.

Her mum, Terri, entered an online competition for a ‘magical garden makeover’ and Talia is currently sitting in the top 12 entries with four days left of the public vote.

That’s important because judges will select the overall winner from the top 12!

Voting is still open so let’s all throw our support behind Talia to make sure she makes the cut! CLICK ON THIS LINK TO VOTE

Duchess of York judges University competition

Following on from her visit to Ruddi’s Retreat yesterday the Duchess of York visited the University of Huddersfield. There she judged a textile design competition between 12 students. The task was to create collections for the children’s market either for fashion or interiors. The designs could be suitable for both children’s fashion and a matching garment for a doll or similarly for a bedroom interior and the interior of a dolls’ house.

Child wandering village streets in PJs was "potentially sleepwalking"

A young boy, who was spotted wandering the streets of Netherthong late last night in just his pyjamas, is believed to have been sleep walking.

A concerned member of the public posted an urgent message on Facebook to alert residents to the lost child who also had bare feet.

The post was shared on a number of community groups and read: “A child of about 6/7 has been seen running in PJs with no shoes on, on the oval and up into the village!”

The post speculated that the boy was “potentially sleep walking” and that he seemed “confused and dazed”.

It added: “When he was approached he has run away!!!”

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police confirmed a boy had been found last night but could not say if he was sleep walking:

“Police were called at 21:56 last night (15 May) to reports of concern for a child on Wesley Avenue, Netherthong.

“The male child was located by officers and returned home safe and well.”

Power cut in Mirfield

A power cut in Mirfield affected more than a thousand properties last night.

Northern Powergrid confirmed that a fault on the underground network caused a loss of power for 1,303 customers at 11.20pm.

Residents on Old Bank Road, Flash Lane, Kitson Hill Road said the power failure caused hundreds of burglar alarms to go off.

Some said the noise was all they could hear and others commented it was driving them crazy.

One Mirfield resident said his alarm clock did not go off this morning as a result.

A Northern Powergrid spokeswoman confirmed said: “Engineers in our control room were able to quickly restore power to 1,058 within 15 minutes by switching our network around to restore power from an alternative source. The remaining 245 customer were restored at 2.00 am.

“We’d like to thank all of our customers for their patience whilst we worked to get the lights back on.”
