WYP respond to rise in crime figures

Police have responded to the latest crime statistics, which have revealed an 11 per cent increase in recorded crime in West Yorkshire.

Just over half of this increase relates to improvements in the way the force records crime, while the rest is specific to a hike in actual crime rates.

Chief constable Dee Collins said: “We are experiencing unprecedented levels of demand which remains a major challenge. In fact last year we answered an extra 23,000 999 calls. Many of these were from vulnerable people requiring urgent help in increasingly complex situations including organised and cyber crime and often requiring our safeguarding expertise.

“Our officers and staff are working extremely hard to provide the best quality service to people across the county but will always prioritise those in the most vulnerable circumstances.”
