Rail workers to strike

Amid the new timetable chaos, the RMT is set to increase problems for the embattled Northern rail operator with another three more days of strike action.

Union members have already held many days of action in a dispute over the role of the conductor.

They are now set to walk out on June 19, 21 and 23.

Girls aged 12 and 13 hospitalised after taking 'Snapchat' pills

West Yorkshire Police have released information relating to another instance of people getting in to trouble with ‘Snapchat’ pills.

“At around 4:42pm yesterday afternoon (05/06) officers stopped a group of teenagers in the Smawthorne Lane area of Castleford.

Two girls aged 12 and 13 were arrested for public order offences and transported to hospital after it was suspected that they had taken an illicit substance. They are both currently in a stable condition under observation.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the nature of the substance. A 13 year old boy from the Castleford area was also later arrested in connection with drugs related offences.”

Protest at Batley station

Batley and Spen MP Tracy Brabin is organising a protest against “over-priced, unreliable and over-crowded” trains at Batley station.

The protest will take place at the station, which is run by Northern Rail, on Friday June 8 and aims to send a powerful message to Transport Secretary Chris Grayling that “enough is enough”.

It follows weeks of disruption on the trains after Northern announced the roll out of a new timetable. The debacle was made worse this week when Northern introduced an emergency timetable, which has seen 165 trains removed from the schedule.

Batley Station, which is operated by Northern, no longer has any Northern services stopping at the station.

MP Tracy Brabin said:

“This shambles is just the tip of the iceberg and the latest in a long line of Government failures on rail.

“Rail fares are up 32% since 2010, rising three times faster than wages and the franchising system is in utter chaos.

“It’s simply not good enough, and something has to change.

“I welcome anyone who is able to join me at Batley Station on Friday morning at 8am so we can show the Government that we mean business.”

Anyone wishing to join the protest should meet at Batley Railway Station at 8am.

It’s happened within the borough area and they said:

“We want to remind the public about the dangers of drugs. Drugs are often given catchy names to appeal to young people.

“We had an incident involving 2 females in hospital after taking ‘Snapchat pills’.

“Any person offered drugs refuse & report via 101 or crime stoppers 0800555111.”
