Detective Chief Inspector Chris Gibson is the Operational Knife Crime Lead for West Yorkshire Police:

“In my role as a Senior Investigating Officer I see first-hand the terrible consequences knife crime can bring.

National news

A campaign calling for a public inquiry into the tragic case of James Bulger - has been deemed “not necessary” despite a petition with almost 190,000 signatures, reports our sister title The Mirror.

Two-year-old James Bulger was abducted in Merseyside on February 12, 1993 - and tortured and killed by Jon Venables and Robert Thompson.

A petition titled ‘We want a Public Inquiry into the James Bulger murder case’ explained the belief by some that “there have been a number of issues that have been swept under the carpet” that should be investigated.

Daughter assaulted dad's new girlfriend who was half his age

A 28-year-old mum who assaulted her former friend after she began a relationship with her dad has been given a suspended prison sentence.

A court heard today that Rebecca Smith told police she was “disgusted” by the fact that her father Donald, who was said to be in his 50s, had started a relationship with her 26-year-old friend Skye Sutcliffe.

Bradford Crown Court heard that Smith, who had no previous convictions, and her sister had been invited round to her dad’s caravan in November 2016 to discuss the situation, but when Miss Sutcliffe came out of the caravan the defendant grabbed her hair and began punching her. Judge Hatton also imposed an indefinite restraining order which bans Smith from contacting the complainant directly or indirectly.
