A murder investigation has been launched after a man was stabbed to death in Lockwood.

Witnesses said around 60 police officers descended on Bentley Street late yesterday evening and a police helicopter circled overhead.

This morning 30 or so officers remain on the scene including what appear to be forensics investigators clad in white jumpsuits.

West Yorkshire Police has now confirmed they have launched a murder probe after a man died in the incident. A woman, 25, has been arrested.

A spokesman said: “At around 11pm, police and ambulance attended the communal area of the residential property and located a 25 year old man with serious injuries. Treatment was provided, however, he subsequently died.

"A 25 year old woman was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and is currently in custody."

Victim named

The man who died in the incident has been named as Gary ‘Gaz’ Atkinson.

What we know so far

Here’s an overview of what we know about the Bentley Street, Lockwood incident so far:

  • A man, aged 25, has died from stab wounds. He was found with serious injuries but despite treatment he died from his injuries.
  • A woman, also aged 25, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder. She remains in custody.
  • We know police were called to the block of flats on Bentley Street in Lockwood at 11pm last night.
  • The crime scene is in a communal area, believed to be on the upstairs floor. That’s where the man was found.
  • Eyewitnesses have told our reporters that a man was heard shouting and may have had either a baseball bat or piece of wood, or similar item.
  • Police have closed off Bentley Street, near the flats, while they carry out investigations.
  • CSI officers have been removing items from the flat; they’ve sent a drone up to record the scene and have been taking photos.
  • Senior Investigating Officer, Chief Inspector Ian Scott has asked that anyone who has witnesses the incident or knows information about it to contact them immediately.

'Baseball bat' report from eyewitness

Eyewitnesses said that yesterday a man turned up at the flat which is the scene of the murder hunt this morning and there was a disturbance.

He was reported to have had either a baseball bat or a piece of wood. Something of a similar size was taken by Crime Scene Investigators this morning wrapped in brown paper.

Murder investigation launched

Police have launched a murder enquiry following a stabbing incident at an address on Bentley Street in the Lockwood area of Huddersfield last night.

At around 11pm, police and ambulance attended the communal area of the residential property and located a 25 year old man with serious injuries. Treatment was provided, however, he subsequently died.

A 25 year old woman was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and is currently in custody.

Senior Investigating Officer, Chief Inspector Ian Scott said: “The local community in Lockwood will be understandably shocked by these events and we will be supporting them with increased visibility and reassurance patrols.

“Many will have seen the emergency response late last night and at the moment, we are in the early stages of this investigation, establishing the circumstances of what has occurred.

“Anyone who has witnessed the incident should contact the police immediately.
