A PUBLIC debate on social businesses is to be held by Huddersfield University.

A panel of experts will try to answer the question: Will they take us to the promised land?

Organiser Chris Low said: "Social businesses are ones that operate for social purpose. But not everyone agrees on how important they are to the community.

"People have very strong views and there will be a vibrant debate."

The event is in the Quayside building on the main campus at 6.30pm next Monday. Entrance is by ticket only.

On the panel will be Jen Robertson, from Buster's Coffee Merchants in Sheffield, which is run by people with learning disabilities.

Other members will be Steve Schofield, an expert in social deprivation; Leeds-based Rob Greenland, an adviser to new enterprises, and Garth Pratt, from Huddersfield, who specialises in co-operatives.

The event is in association with New Start and Social Enterprise magazines.

Tickets are available from Joanne Battye at the business studies department (phone 01484 472024 or email j.batty@ hud.ac.uk)
