DEVELOPERS have worked with residents on plans for a new housing estate.

The derelict former Victoria Dyeworks site off Halifax Road, Hightown, Liversedge, has been an eyesore for several years.

People have said they want to see the land improved, but no viable plans have yet been put forward.

In 2009 Kirklees planners turned down an application for a 48-bed care home and 60 houses.

Several plans have been put forward, the most recent a mixed use scheme for residential, light industrial, a nursing home and a convenience store.

There was no take-up for the commercial properties, so developer Harron Homes is now seeking permission for residential use only.

The company has submitted plans for 56 homes on the site which borders Halifax Road, Miry Lane and Teasel Close.

The firm says it has worked closely with Kirklees Council and local residents to overcome “initial concerns.” A public consultation meeting was held at St Barnabas’ Church, Hightown, in November.

A design and access statement, submitted as part of the planning application, says the proposed new houses would be in-keeping with those in the surrounding area which are both traditional and modern in style.

The developers describe them as “high quality yet affordable family homes to suit a wide range of purchasers which will complement the current housing stock.”

The five-acre former industrial site was a target for vandals and arsonists before the old buildings were demolished.
