THIEVES potentially put lives at risk after stealing a satellite navigation screen from an ambulance.

The crew were caring for a patient in a house on Broomroyd, off Botham Hall Road in Longwood, when the thieves struck.

The screen they took is designed only to work with the ambulance service's satnav system, so will be useless in cars.

Det Con Gerry Joyce, of Kirklees CID intelligence unit, said: "This was an appalling theft and we'd certainly like to hear from anyone who can name the thieves."

A spokeswoman for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service said the vehicle had to be taken out of service as soon as the crew found the satnav had been stolen.

If they had lost their way responding to the next emergency the theft could have put lives in danger, she added.

The theft happened just after 6pm on Saturday.
