UP TO 40% of burglaries at this time of year are as a result of lapses in security, with homeowners leaving doors unlocked.
People should help to reduce the risk of burglary by locking their doors at all times.
Thieves are using fishing techniques to get hold of keys left near doors and windows.
Crime prevention officer Mark Wall said: “I’m not sure why people are not locking their doors while they are in. Perhaps its a feeling of safety and security, a feeling that it ‘won’t happen to me’.
“But this mindset must be changed.
“The chances of you being a victim of a household burglary in Kirklees are thankfully low. But with more care and vigilance, you can reduce that risk even more.”
