A DOG which is thought to have mauled a mum-of-two has been captured.

Waheed Akhtar, 26, of Upper Mount Street, Lockwood, suffered severe facial injuries in a dog attack outside her home on Tuesday.

Police believe the banned pit bull breed dog, caught at Kilner Bank on Thursday, is the animal which attacked Ms Akhtar.

Two men have been charged under the Dangerous Dogs Act and have been bailed to appear at court at a later date.

Ms Akhtar, who was savaged while trying to defend her baby son, is at Bradford Royal Infirmary receiving reconstructive surgery.

A police spokesman said: “Working alongside the RSPCA, police yesterday assisted in seizing a dog which was found in the Kilner Bank area of Huddersfield.

“Officers believe this is the animal involved in the attack in Upper Mount Street.

“It has been examined by a specialist dog handler who identified it as a banned breed – a pit bull type.

“Further enquiries will be undertaken. However, we would thank the public for a good response following the appeals for information.”

The dog will now be held in kennels pending any court action over the attack on Ms Akhtar.

She is expected to remain in hospital for several more days.
