A MAN lashed out at a female Special Constable as she tried to stop him from brawling in the street.

Adam Cluny, of Meltham Road in Lockwood, admitted the assault on Sarah Gilks when he appeared before Kirklees magistrates.

The bench was told that the incident happened in Huddersfield town centre at 2am on July 7.

Ms Gilks was on patrol when she saw Cluny fighting with another male outside the Tokyo nightclub on Queen Street.

Vanessa Schofield, prosecuting, said: “She tried to break up the fight by shouting ‘stop, police’, she then grabbed hold of him by the arm.

“As she did he was still swinging out to try and punch the other man.

“He caught her in the face, causing instant pain and swelling around her eyes.”

Magistrates were told that the constable was left shocked and with a bruised eye socket.

As a result of the assault, Cluny was arrested and admitted he was drunk.

Mrs Schofield said: “He said he had been jumped on in the club and continued to fight with that man outside after being ejected.

“He apologised for hitting the officer. He thought she was the guy and did apologise to her.”

Magistrates were told that the 29-year-old had been drinking amicably with the man when he suddenly ‘flipped out’.

He admitted the assault but said it was reckless.

Magistrates ordered Cluny to pay £100 compensation to Ms Gilks.

He was also fined £55 and told to pay £85 costs and £15 victim surcharge.
