DISABLED people in Huddersfield have seen long-lasting benefits from two projects supported by the Government last year.
The Black Vote Counts scheme was given £9,500 from the Department of Work and Pensions, to raise awareness among disabled African- Caribbean people about the importance of voting.
Meanwhile, the music group Hi-Notes, run by the Music and the Deaf charity, was handed £8,810 to hold after- school workshops for hearing-impaired young people across Kirklees.
The European Year of Disabled People was also paid for by the European Commission.
Nationally, more than 170 projects received cash ranging from £600 to £50,000, totalling £2.3m.
Minister for Disabled People Maria Eagle said the work had long-lasting impact.
She added: "Up and down the country, the year enabled a tremendous variety of activities that helped increase the sense of confidence and empowerment of the disabled people and disability organisations that took part."
