It's traditionally known as the summer solstice. The word solstice means 'sun-stopping' - and the point on the horizon where the sun appears to rise and set stops and reverses direction after this day.

On the solstice, the sun does not rise precisely in the east, but rises to the north of east and sets to the north of west, meaning it is visible in the sky for longer.

Over the centuries it's inspired many festivals, celebrations and religious holidays.

Part of Stonehenge is aligned with the setting sun on the summer solstice and English Heritage permits access to the stones on that day, and the winter solstice only.

This year you can access the stones from 7pm before sunset at 9.26pm. The following day, the sun rises at 4.52am, and the field closes at 8am.
