A tennis club has served up an ace on its 100th birthday.

Longley Tennis and Bowling Club formed in 1914 with three grass courts and a bowling green.

It has grown over the years and, now known as Longley Community Sports Club, members served up a few treats to mark its grand old age.

The looked back on its achievements over the years, including a pavilion built in 1954 at a cost of £300, the first lady directors being elected in 1984 and an indoor court opening in 1992 – nine years after it was first proposed.

The club has been beset by difficulties, including in 2002 when its pavilion burnt down.

However, since 2006 major improvement work has taken place and now the club has celebrated its centenary.

Over 100 guests were welcomed to the celebrations, including members, past members, local councillors and friends.

After the opening ceremony by Simon Haigh, one of the directors, guests were able to watch a demonstration of mini-tennis staged by the coach, Helen Myles, followed by a mixed doubles match between four of the first team players – Jacqui Burns, Lesley Stead, Simon Haigh and Fraser Lynch.
