A FATHER drove his three children along Longwood Road while almost five times over the legal alcohol limit.

Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court heard that Adam Whitehead’s three children had to be rescued from the back of his car on June 19.

A member of the public spotted the 36-year-old when his car apparently caught fire, giving off a huge amount of smoke.

But he continued his journey with the youngsters in the back of the car.

The witness managed to stop the vehicle to get the children out.

But Whitehead, of Oakes, carried on driving for a short while until police stopped him.

The father had 162 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres or breath – the limit is 35.

Whitehead, dressed in a suit, pleaded guilty to drink driving.

His case was adjourned until July 9 for further reports.

Whitehead was disqualified from driving.

Magistrates warned he could face custody.
