ONE has rocket boosters, hi-tech weaponry, an on-board computer and a small helicopter concealed in the boot.

The other has furry dice and a price tag of less than £100.

But three friends from Huddersfield are taking their own version of the Batmobile on a cross-continent jaunt to raise cash for charity.

Adam Wilkinson, Robert Frost and Justin Ruta are taking part in the Ramshackle Rally – a challenge to drive from Calais in France to Krakow, Poland, in four days.

The 100 teams taking part had to buy a car for less than £100.

They will have to complete a series of tasks along the way. The winners will get the chance to compete in the famous Gumball Rally in the USA.

Mechanical engineer Adam, 21, graduate Robert, 20, both of Wood-thorpe Terrace at Outcote Bank, and student Justin, 20, of Berry Brow, got their car, an N-registration Fiat Bravo, for free.

White Cottage garage, at Cooper Bridge Road, gave them the car after hearing about the rally.

The trio have spent the last few months working on the car.

Adam said: “Every team has to have a theme. We had some black paint so we decided to go with a Batman theme.

“We had to replace both headlights and there were a couple of dents, but it runs OK.

“It has 84,000 miles on the clock and we have to get it through the MOT.

“But we’re confident we’ll make it.”

The pals are doing the event, which starts on August 1, in aid of Kirkwood Hospice. They have raised about £400 so far.

Adam said: “We have all had grandparents who have been in the hospice, so it means something to us.”
