One of Calderdale's busiest roads was closed for several hours today after a lorry disgorged 10 tonnes of rubbish.

The A6025 Park Road between Elland and Brighouse was closed in both directions with queueing traffic due to a skip wagon overturning and shedding ten tonnes of rubbish between Exley Lane (Elland) and Binns Top Lane (Hipperholme).

West Yorkshire Police said the accident occurred near the Colliers Arms at 2.30pm.

A spokesman said: "Fortunately the driver has got out of the lorry and is fine. Road closures were put in place at Elland Bridge End.

"Recovery has been organised for the skip and emergency services were made aware of the road closure.

"The skip was freed from the transporter and attempts made to recover it. The road was still closed at 5.37pm."

A resident said: "It appears that a lorry might have clipped the skip wagon and has sent it trundling up the bank and it has then overturned back onto the road."
