The sun shone down on Meltham Memories weekend for its biggest ever event.

The seventh annual wartime festival attracted hundreds of revellers keen to bolster a great community spirit throughout the town.

Dressed in their best 1940s get up, people lined the streets to watch the impressive parade before enjoying re-enactments, dances and a RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Music and stalls took over Meltham CofE Primary School, the fire station on Holmfirth Road and St Bartholomew's Church, with the last hosting a victory ball presided over by the Manchester Police Big Band.

Pam Cox, chair of the organising committee, said she was "delighted" with the turn out at the event.

Pam, who is also the licensee of the Wagon and Horses pub, said: "This is our seventh year and its our biggest, most beautiful and grandest yet.

"We've had several new additions such as our Meltham memorial flights which people have been taking off in all day.

"Around 15 community groups have got involved by putting on stalls or helping in another way.

"It's just a great way to bring people out and get everyone to know each other and we're so pleased it has gone so well."

Vintage vehicles, military personnel and school children made up the parade, along with Meltham Mills Brass Band and Oldham Pipe Band, who provided a stirring soundtrack.

Jean Herrera, of Liversedge, who was with her husband Gerald, said: "We had the choice of three 1940s events this weekend but chose this one and we've really enjoyed it.

"We'll definitely get involved with the dancing later on."

Robert Sinclair, detachment commander of the Thongsbridge Army Cadets, was taking part in the event with his section for the first time.

He said: "It's really good to see so many people involved because it brings the community together and it' great to see all the vintage military vehicles."

The event was continuing on Sunday including a 1940s dress up church service at 10.30am in St Bartholomew's Church, followed by a 1940s to 70s fashion show, vintage car parade and afternoon tea at 1pm.
