AN OPEN day showed the popularity of finding out about family trees.

Huddersfield and District Family History Society attracted more than

100 visitors to its open day at its base, The Root Cellar in Meltham. People from as far away as Blackpool and the Midlands went.

The open day aimed to show what help the society can offer to people

trying to trace their roots. Lynne Schofield, of the society, said: "Some of the people were

absolute beginners and others were seasoned researchers and family historians. "All wanted to share their family stories."

The society offers access to parish registers, census documents,

probate records, birth, marriage and death registers and the internet. Now it wants to encourage people who missed the open day to visit

The Root Cellar at Market Place to find out more. It is open at these times: Tuesday from 2pm to 4.30pm; Wednesday

from 10am to 12.30pm and 2pm to 4.30pm; Thursday from 2pm to 4.30pm and 7.30pm to 10pm; and Saturday from 2pm to 4.30pm. For more information, contact 01484 859229 or visit www.hdfhs.org.uk
