A DRIVER had a miraculous escape after his lorry careered off the M62 early today.

The lorry, believed to have been carrying eggs, left the westbound carriageway just before Scammonden Dam at 4.50am.

It ploughed 30ft up a banking, flipped over and ended up on its side.

The driver managed to scramble free from his stricken vehicle.

Firefighter Kevin Scrimshaw, of Elland fire station, said: "The lorry somehow missed all the crash barriers and lamp-posts.

"The driver was lucky to escape with a cut face."

A police spokesman said the lorry was registered to a Dover firm. The driver was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for a check-up over concerns about his blood pressure.

He added: "We will not move the lorry until the motorway is quieter. Queues have built up mainly because people having been slowing down to look at the lorry."
