It was a stark warning. Lose weight, or lose a limb.

That was the message to University of Huddersfield student Amraze Khan from doctors which prompted him to become a super slimmer and shed nearly seven stones in just six months.

Huddersfield graduate Amraze, 23, lost nearly a quarter of his body weight after worries his eating habits were digging him an early grave and putting him at risk of diabetes.

At 23 stone, Amraze claimed he couldn’t even bear to look at his own reflection, but since his drastic weight loss he has a new lease of life and has even taken up boxercise classes.

The marketing and public relations graduate, who worked for the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust and now works for the South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Trust, lives in Norton Tower, Halifax. He was eating up to five takeaways a week and growing out of XXXL clothing.

"When I couldn’t get into my favourite clothes, I would blame the clothing manufacturers for their ‘tight’ fittings," he said.

“I would go out and buy bigger sizes and leave clothes at the back of my drawer, hoping one day I could get back into them.

“I knew I had to do something about my weight.

“I would always avoid looking at myself in the mirror because I wasn’t happy with the way I looked and this just gave me the kick up the backside that I so badly needed.”

He added: “With the thought of getting diabetes in the back of my head, I decided to join Slimming World.”

Amraze said doctors warned he was close to being diagnosed with the condition, which his mother suffers from.

In extreme cases, the disease can sometimes result in amputation.

Six months on and Amraze has shed six stones and ten pounds and says he has had to buy a whole new wardrobe.

"I used to hide away at home and avoid going out with friends. I now enjoy going out a lot more.

“I just can’t believe that I have lost this much weight, it has helped with my confidence so much.

“Before my weight loss, I couldn’t hold eye contact with anybody, I would look at the floor but now I can look up with confidence and pride.”

Amraze has also won Slimmer of the Month or Slimmer of the Week ten times, and was named his group’s man of the year for 2015.

Amraze says he now wants to “help others feel as confident” and is setting up his own Slimming World class which will run at Pellon Baptist Church, Halifax, at 5.30pm on New Year's Eve then 7.30pm on Thursdays in the New Year.
