A PROJECT to help old people beat loneliness is in the money, thanks to a lottery grant.

Almost £5,000 has been won for the work being done in Deighton and Birkby.

The cash will go to a project being run by the Church of England's Huddersfield deanery.

It aims to help old people overcome isolation through group activities and one-to- one support.

Organisers will use the windfall to pay for transport to take elderly people to activities such as bowling and craft sessions.

The boost is one of a number of grants being made to groups by Awards For All.

Other grants include:

* £4,820 for Shepley First School, to set up after-school football coaching clubs for pupils.

The project will include running inter- school competitions.

Children from across the school's age range will receive professional coaching

* £5,000 for Holme Valley Sharing Memories Group, which helps young and old record their memories

* £5,000 for the Huddersfield-based Positive Music Agency, to produce a CD featuring African and Caribbean musicians

* £5,000 for Diffusion, a Huddersfield- based group which promotes South Asian dance and music

* £4,750 for Ravens- thorpe Sports Action Group to run a sports tournament.
