A LOW-flying aircraft prompted a big emergency alert at Shepley.

Several fire engines and police vehicles were called to the car park of the Sovereign Inn, Shepley, at around 11.30am yesterday.

Pub manager James Heathcote said the vehicles arrived around that time and left a quarter of an hour later. They had been told it was only as a precautionary measure.

A police spokesman said a member of the public had dialled 999 expressing concerns about the low flying aircraft.

Nick Alderson, crew manager at Skelmanthorpe fire station, said: "We were mobilised by police as a precautionary measure and put on standby at the Sovereign."

Leeds-Bradford airport said the aircraft was flying low to take aerial photographs and was allowed in the airspace.

It later landed at Doncaster Airport.
