A MAN caught carrying an axe in a street has been sentenced to a community order.

Adrian Gilroy, 29, of Longley Road, Lowerhouses, was ordered to carry out 150 hours unpaid work by Kirklees Magistrates yesterday.

The court heard father-of-five Gilroy was caught with an axe on Longley Road on September 9.

His solicitor Ian Whiteley said Gilroy’s brother had been carrying the axe in an agitated state.

Mr Whiteley said: “He took the axe off his brother and tried to calm his brother down. He was in control of the axe but for a very short time.

“He accepts he binge drinks and he doesn’t know when to stop. When he doesn’t drink he’s a completely different young man.”

Gilroy, who also admitted breaching bail and possession of cannabis, was handed a 12-month community order to pay £190 costs plus a £60 victim surcharge.
